| A quantum of light coming from the deeper layers of the star is captured by an atom of its atmosphere. What is the further “fate” of the atom?
Three situations are possible: a) a quantum of light can be re-emitted at the same frequency, but in a different direction, which leads to weakening of the radiation; b) a quantum can be re-emitted at a different frequency, which leads to a redistribution of the intensity over the spectrum; c) the energy of a quantum can be used to increase the kinetic energy of the atom, while the internal energy of the substance increases.
