Assemble a circuit consisting of a source (battery), rheostat, light bulb and key. Bring the compass to the rheostat from above. Notice how the compass needle is oriented. Close the key. Has the compass needle orientation changed?
When the circuit is closed, the magnetic needle turns, which indicates the magnetic action of the current.
