Such a phenomenon is possible when a large meteorite passes through the Earth’s atmosphere. A large positive charge of a meteorite induces a negative charge of the same modulus on the Earth’s surface. A spark discharge can occur between the meteorite and the Earth in the air at the appropriate strength of the electric field.
