Can bacteria reproduce sexually?

Sexual reproduction in prokaryotes is much less common than asexual, but it is very important, because when exchanging genetic information, bacteria transmit resistance to adverse effects (for example, drugs) to each other. During the sexual process, bacteria can exchange both parts of the bacterial chromosome and special small circular double-stranded DNA molecules – plasmids. Metabolism can occur through the cytoplasmic bridge between two bacteria or with the help of viruses that metabolize DNA sections of one bacterium and transfer them to other bacterial cells that they infect.
