| Chimpanzees have 48 chromosomes in a diploid set. How many chromosomes will be in cells: a) after mitosis; b) after meiosis; c) in the interphase?
The somatic cells of the animal have 48 chromosomes (2n). During meiosis, the number of chromosomes is halved. This means that in gametes after meiosis there are 24 chromosomes (1n). During mitosis, changes in the number of chromosomes in cells do not occur, that is, 48 chromosomes remain in the nuclei. Since interphase is the period between two mitoses, then the cells will have 48 chromosomes.
Answer: a) 48; b) 24; c) 48
