| In 1899, Rutherford and his colleagues experimentally discovered that radioactive radiation has a complex composition. They used a special installation to study radioactive radiation. A grain of radium was placed at the bottom of a narrow channel in a thick-walled lead vessel. The output beam of radioactive radiation of radium was acted upon by a strong magnetic field. The magnetic induction lines were perpendicular to the outgoing beam. A photographic plate was located opposite the channel, on which radioactive radiation was directed. The entire setup was placed under vacuum.
