Describe the actions of the parties in the final period of the Thirty Years War.

After the death of Gustav II Adolf, the Swedish troops in Germany were replenished by mercenaries, criminals and prisoners. The army turned into gangs of robbers. A war began to exhaust the enemy. The lands were devastated. The thirst for profit led Protestants to serve in the Catholic army and vice versa. The number of looting deserters grew.
In 1635 France entered the war, declaring war on Spain. Catholic France became an ally of the Protestant states – Holland and Sweden. By 1648, the French had won a number of important victories. This forced the new emperor Ferdinand III to sign a peace treaty.
