| The functions of the endocrine glands are controlled by the nervous system. The main structures of the neurohumoral mechanism are the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. They are combined by neural connections and general blood flow into a single hypothalamic-pituitary system. Hypothalamic neurons produce special neurohormones. With blood flow, they enter the pituitary gland and affect its endocrine activity. Pituitary hormones, in turn, affect the activity of other glands
