Determine the number of chromosomes in the endosperm cells of the onion seed if the onion root cells contain 16 chromosomes.

| The endosperm of angiosperms is formed by the fusion of the central cell of the embryo sac, which is diploid, and one sperm, which is haploid. Accordingly, the endosperm is triploid. The cells of the body of onions, like all angiosperms, are diploid and contain 16 chromosomes. This means that the haploid set of chromosomes in an onion is 16: 2 = 8 chromosomes, and the triploid (endosperm) is 8 * 3 = 24 chromosomes.
