| During glycolysis, 42 molecules of pyruvic acid were formed. How many glucose molecules have been degraded and how many ATP molecules are formed during complete oxidation?
1) During glycolysis, one glucose molecule is cleaved to form 2 molecules of pyruvic acid (PVA), therefore, 42: 2 = 21 glucose molecules underwent glycolysis;
2) With the complete oxidation of one glucose molecule (oxygen-free and oxygen stages) 38 ATP molecules are formed;
3) When 21 molecules are oxidized, 21 x 38 = 798 ATP molecules are formed.
Answer: 21 glucose molecules; 798 ATP molecules
