The most important battles were fought in the Philippines, on the Japanese islands of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The Japanese fought fiercely for their territory. It took from 1 to 2 months to capture one island. The United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki; on August 9, 1945, Soviet troops launched an offensive against Manchuria.
