| Mid-ocean ridges are one of the most active areas of the earth’s crust, where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions often occur. They are the boundaries of the expanding lithospheric plates. As the plates move apart, molten rock from the bowels of the Earth rushes to the surface and closes the gap. This is how the earth’s crust is born. Some of the ridge peaks rise above the water level and form islands.
