| Give an example of an aluminum-based alloy. What is the composition of this alloy? How does the physical properties of this alloy differ from those of pure aluminum?
An example of an aluminum based alloy; duralumin. The average chemical composition of duralumin is as follows:
copper 3-5%,
magnesium 0.5-1.8%,
manganese 0.3-0.8%,
silicon 0.5-1.2%,
iron less than 0.1%,
aluminum is the rest.
Combining low specific gravity with high strength, duralumin is the best modern structural material for aircraft construction. And as we know, although aluminum itself is light, but not strong, it can be rolled into foil. Therefore, such a property as strength, distinguishes duralumin alloy from pure aluminum.
