How can one explain that crocodiles, while on land, lie with their mouths open, and at night go into the water?

1) On land it’s hot during the day, and crocodiles open their mouths to increase heat transfer by evaporation.
2) At night it is warmer in water than on land, so crocodiles, when transferred to water, retain heat.
