| Electrons in metals are in continuous motion. Their erratic movement resembles the movement of ideal gas molecules. In the presence of an electric current in the conductor, electrons continue to move also randomly, but at the same time moving against the field. The drift speed of electrons is very small compared to the speed of chaotic motion.
