How did Henry VIII become the head of the Church of England? Did the British approve of this?

Henry VIII personally led the Reformation in England. By declaring the English church independent from Rome, Henry proclaimed himself head of the new church. Parliament approved this initiative, since there were no other clear leaders of the Reformation in the country yet.
