How did the ancient peoples imagine the universe?

Ancient Indians assumed that the Earth is flat and rests on the backs of giant elephants that rest on a turtle. The tortoise is standing on a snake that personifies the sky and closes the earth’s space. The Universe was seen differently by the peoples living on the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The land, in their opinion, is a mountain that is surrounded by the sea on all sides and which is supported by twelve columns.
