The first living ones were heterotrophs, that is, they used organic compounds dissolved in the waters of the primary ocean as a source of energy (food). Since there was no free oxygen in the Earth’s atmosphere, they had an anaerobic (oxygen-free) type of exchange, the effectiveness of which is low.
