How did the peoples of Mesopotamia adopt their alphabet from the Phoenicians without abandoning cuneiform writing?

The new peoples of Mesopotamia (Arameans) chose one of their own words for each Phoenician letter, starting with this letter. Groups of wedges representing these words began to play the role of letters in the new alphabetical notation.
