| At the turn of the new era, numerous settlements of Indian sailors were formed along the shores of Malaya and Indonesia. In the V-VIII centuries, Chinese settlements appeared in these parts. They now make up the majority of the population in many of the coastal towns in the area. For example, Singapore was founded by immigrants from Malaya (now Chinese are predominant among its inhabitants).
