How did the Spice Route influence the emergence of the first states in Southeast Asia? How did the balance of forces of different states in this region change from the 5th to the 15th century?
The first states of Southeast Asia known to us were carried along the sea coasts, for example, the Srivijaya and Shailendra empires in Indonesia. Only later (in the 9th-11th centuries), kingdoms remote from the shores rose: on the mainland – Cambodia, Pagan (Burma) and Sukotay (Thailand), and on the island of Java – Mataram. By the XIV century, the “deep” states subjugated all the lands of this region, except for some coastal cities.
