How do antivirus software detect viruses?

Antivirus programs use constantly updated lists of known viruses. The lists contain typical fragments (signatures) of the program code of viruses. If the anti-virus program detects a computer code of a virus in any file, then the file is considered an infected virus and must be disinfected, i.e. the virus program code is removed from it. If disinfection is not possible, the entire infected file is deleted.
