How do artificial comets differ from natural ones?

An artificial comet is a cloud of gas formed by the sublimation of sodium released at high altitude above the Earth’s surface. The glow of the expanding plasma cloud makes it possible to study the properties of the Earth’s atmosphere and magnetosphere.
