How do molecular spectra differ from atomic spectra?

| The spectra of molecular gases differ from atomic spectra. They look like a system of stripes of numerous and very close lines to each other. The position of each band corresponds to one of the possible electronic transitions. The splitting of one energy level into a band of closely spaced sublevels is explained by two reasons: vibrations of atoms inside the molecule and its rotation.
