How do populations participate in the circulation of substances and the flow of energy of biogeocenosis?

As part of the biogeocenosis, the population performs a certain function in it: it either serves as an energy supplier (creates nutrients for someone, i.e. serves as food), or consumes energy itself (eats someone). Accordingly, the population occupies a certain position in the community, actively participating in the circulation of substances and the flow of energy, that is, it occupies one or another ecological niche in the biogeocenosis.
