How does a local network work? What functions does it perform?

Small computer networks operating within the same premises, one and an enterprise are called local area networks. There are two types of LANs: peer-to-peer and a network with a remote node. In peer-to-peer local networks, all computers are equal. A dedicated LAN includes a server and multiple workstations. The server is used as a repository of general information resources, and also contains some technical devices for general access.
