How does a semiconductor diode work? What are its main properties?

A semiconductor diode is a semiconductor device with one electrical junction and two leads (electrodes). Unlike other types of diodes, the principle of operation of a semiconductor diode is based on the p-n-junction phenomenon. In this case, the diode passes current in only one direction (the arrow indicates the direction of the current).
