How does the number of chromosomes in somatic and germ cells correlate?

In somatic cells, each chromosome has a pair and this chromosome set is called double or diploid.
Sex cells always contain half as much chromosomes as somatic cells of a given organism (haploid set). When two germ cells merge, a double set of chromosomes inherent in this species is restored.
