How is the transition of an atomic nucleus from one energy state to another explained using the shell model?

| As in the atom, a new energy shell corresponds to a new energy level, so in the nucleus, protons and neutrons fill the shells. If energy equal to the difference in energies of different levels is transferred to the nucleus, then a proton or neutron will be able to pass into a new energy state with a higher energy.
