How to distinguish an “old” comet from a “young” one?

Young comets are usually referred to as comets that have made a small number of perihelion passages. These comets have intense gas release. “Old” comets are short-period comets that have repeatedly passed near the Sun. Their activity is significantly lower than that of the “young” ones.
