In the process of energy metabolism, 7 mol of glucose have been split, of which only 2 have undergone complete breakdown. Determine:
a) how many moles of pyruvic acid and CO2 were formed;
b) how much ATP is synthesized at the same time;
c) how much energy is stored in these ATP molecules;
d) how much mol of O2 was consumed?
1) out of 7 moles of glucose, 2 underwent complete degradation, 5 – incomplete.
2) 5 С6Н12О6 → 5 × 2 С3Н4О3 + 5 × 2 ATP (incomplete cleavage of 5 mol of glucose) = 10 mol of ATP
3) 2 С6Н12О6 + 2 × 6 О2 → 2 × 6 СО2 + 2 × 6 Н2О + 2 × 38 ATP (complete decomposition = 76 mol of ATP
4) sum up the amount of ATP: 10 + 76 = 86 mol of ATP
5) determine the amount of energy in the ATP molecule:
86 x 40 kJ = 3440 kJ.
Answer a) 10 mol C3H4O3 and 12 mol CO2; b) 86 ATP molecules; c) 3440 kJ of energy; d) 12 mol O2
