With the participation of some microorganisms in the mining industry, metals are successfully extracted from low-grade ores, they improve the quality of brown and hard coal, and they increase the oil recovery in oil production.
The process is based on the oxidation by bacteria of sulfides of copper, iron, zinc, tin, cadmium to sulfates that are readily soluble in water. The vital activity of thionic bacteria requires oxygen, Fe2 +, Fe3 + ions and an acidic environment (pH = 2-3), which is achieved by saturating the sulfide ore dumps with specially injected air, irrigation with a solution containing sulfuric acid and iron ions. Under such conditions, the leaching solution is filtered through the thickness of the ore and is enriched with metals as a result of micro-biological and chemical processes.
