The medulla oblongata performs two functions – reflex and conduction.
Conducting function of the medulla oblongata. The ascending paths from the spinal cord to the brain and the descending paths connecting the cerebral cortex to the spinal cord pass through the medulla oblongata.
Reflex centers of the medulla oblongata. In the medulla oblongata, a number of vital centers are located: the respiratory, cardiovascular and food centers.
