| Indicate the reason for the difference in the melting temperatures of chemical analogs: silicon oxide (IV) and carbon monoxide (IV). Why does the earth’s crust contain large amounts of silicon (IV) oxide?
SiO2 has an atomic crystal lattice, while CO2 has a molecular crystal lattice. And as we know, substances with an atomic crystal lattice are characterized by high boiling and melting points, in contrast to substances with a molecular crystal lattice, which at room temperature are often in a gaseous state, like CO2. Silicon (IV) oxide is a constituent of sand, so the earth’s crust contains a lot of this oxide.
