Is it possible to guess from the writings of Machiavelli, in which state he lived – in a monarchy or a republic? If in a republic, then in which – democratic or aristocratic?
In a monarchical state (like Naples) Machiavelli could not have published such a frank analysis of political secrets. In an aristocratic republic (like Venice), he, apparently, could not even come up with his own scheme.
