Is it possible to guess from the writings of Machiavelli, in which state he lived – in a monarchy or a republic?

Is it possible to guess from the writings of Machiavelli, in which state he lived – in a monarchy or a republic? If in a republic, then in which – democratic or aristocratic?

In a monarchical state (like Naples) Machiavelli could not have published such a frank analysis of political secrets. In an aristocratic republic (like Venice), he, apparently, could not even come up with his own scheme.

Remember: The process of learning a person lasts a lifetime. The value of the same knowledge for different people may be different, it is determined by their individual characteristics and needs. Therefore, knowledge is always needed at any age and position.
