| Vladimir Monomakh was married to Gita, the daughter of King Harold of Saxon. She was taken from England after Harold’s death at Hastings. But none of the Western European rulers dared to marry her, because then William I the Conqueror would become his enemy. As a result, Gita was sent to Russia; her descendants had a formal right to the English throne, but never exercised it.
