Types of galaxies: elliptical, spiral, irregular. Elliptical galaxies range in shape from round to very highly flattened. Spiral galaxies are of two types: normal spirals, in which spiral arms begin directly from the central region, and crossed spirals, in which the arms do not exit from the core, but are connected with a bar passing through the center of the galaxy. Irregular galaxies have no definite shape.
