Normally, only hemoglobin A (HbA) is synthesized in the erythrocytes of an adult. In the presence of a gene mutation in one of the hemoglobin genes in a heterozygous organism (HbAHbS), 60% HbA and 40% HbS are synthesized in erythrocytes. HbS cannot perform the function of oxygen transport. Provided there is sufficient oxygen, heterozygotes are practically healthy. In homozygotes HbSHbS, only HbS is synthesized, as a result of which a serious disease develops – sickle cell anemia (one of the forms of anemia), in which erythrocytes take the shape of a sickle. Patients with sickle cell anemia are not viable and die in early childhood. Determine what is the probability of having a healthy blue-eyed child from the marriage of two di-heterozygous parents (brown eyes dominate over blue).
The probability of having a healthy blue-eyed child from a marriage of two diheterozygous parents is 1/4.
