The ancient platform is a stable, rigid section of the earth’s crust with a Precambrian basement composed of ancient igneous crystalline rocks. At the top, the foundation is covered with a sedimentary cover of varying thickness. Areas of the platform where the foundation comes out to the surface are called shields.
