Strong tidal friction is believed to be the cause of the massive volcanism on Jupiter’s moon Io. Does the existence of tidal friction contradict the fact of synchronous rotation of the satellite?
Io’s orbit has a slight eccentricity, which leads to librations in longitude, and hence to tidal deformations.
