The Portuguese, Spaniards, Dutch and English competed for the discovery of Australia. Multiple approaches to the shores of the mainland were carried out, but this is more likely an accident. In 1606, the Spaniard Torres expedition reached the eastern, and later western coast of Australia. In the same year, the Dutch, under the command of Janszon, made the first landing of Europeans on the mainland. The Dutchman Tasman during his expeditions proved the existence of the southern mainland. These discoveries were kept secret and Australia’s research gradually calmed down and stopped for more than a hundred years.
Only in 1770, the English navigator James Cook confirmed the existence of Australia and declared it British possession.
