| In industry, CO is obtained by burning coal in special furnaces, gas generators, as a result of two successive reactions.
At the bottom of the gasifier, where there is a lot of oxygen, the reaction takes place:
C (g) + O2 (g) = CO2 + 402 kJ
As CO2 moves from bottom to top: it comes into contact with hot coal:
CO2 (g.) + C (tv.) = 2CO (g.) – 175 kJ
In gas generators, water vapor is sometimes passed through hot coal. This produces a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen – synthesis gas (water gas):
С + Н2О = СО + Н2 -Q
