“The 10% rule”: when moving from one trophic level to another, 90% of the energy is dissipated. Using the “10% Rule”, calculate the mass of non-predatory fish (in tonnes) required for the normal functioning of one seal weighing 90 kg, in the food chain phytoplankton → zooplankton → non-predatory fish → predatory fish → seal.
90 kg · 10 = 900 kg · 10 = 9000 kg = 9 t
