The astronauts noted that only stars up to third magnitude were visible on the moon in the daytime in a black sky, and not fainter, as expected. What physical properties of the circumlunar space does this phenomenon indicate?
We believe that during these observations the blinding effect of sunlight on the eye was excluded. Then the limiting stellar magnitude of the stars should have been the same as on Earth at night, that is, about 6m. The absence of faint stars in the moon’s sky indicates the scattering of sunlight in the circumlunar space. It is believed that the reason for this is fine dust – a kind of dusty atmosphere of the moon.
