The beginning of European integration

1949 – Creation of the Council of Europe (Strasbourg)
1951 – European Coal and Steel Community
1957 – creation of the EEC, or “Common Market”
1979 – creation of the European monetary system
1986 – Adoption of the Single European Act with the aim of transition from the “Common Market” to a single one with free movement
1993 – creation of the EU
1997 – adoption of a single currency – the euro
