| The continuous spectrum of the solar corona is identical to the continuous spectrum of the solar photosphere. Why, however, are the Fraunhofer lines not visible in the corona spectrum?
The continuous spectrum of the corona arises when the light of the photosphere is scattered by free electrons of the corona. The absence of Fraunhofer lines is explained by the very high velocities of the scattering particles. The Doppler broadening of the absorption lines is so great that the lines are “smeared” over the continuous spectrum.
