The Inquisition was created by Pope Gregory IX in 1227 to monitor the religious beliefs of the conquered but not yet subdued heretics of Languedoc. The inquisitors caught underground agitators (Cathars) and carried out mass terror against all who listened to them. By 1244, the last Cathar leaders were captured and burned.
