| The matter of stars is plasma. Does it consist of electrons and positive ions, or can there be negative ions in it, despite the high temperature?
In order for negative ions to form, there must be neutral atoms in the plasma. This means that the material of the star should not be completely, but partially ionized. The state of partially ionized gas is found only in the outer layers of stars, where the temperature is relatively low. The presence of negative hydrogen ions in the solar photosphere is responsible for its high opacity.
