| The “rex” title reappeared in Italy in the 5th century after a long hiatus. Who was its first carrier in the 5th century? Who was the last holder of this title before this century?
The last rex of ancient Italy was the Etruscan Tarquinius the Proud (deposed in 509 BC). The first Rex of barbarian Italy in the 5th century was the squire Odoacer in 476. He was killed by the Ostrogoth Theodoric, who also declared himself a rex.
