The struggle of Portugal, France and England for India

Main events:
1497 – the beginning of Portuguese colonization (Vasco da Gama opened the sea route to India). The Portuguese were followed by the Dutch, the French and the British;
1600 – Establishment of the East India Company by the British;
1690 – the foundation of the city of Calcutta by the British. Creation of military detachments (sepoys) from the local population, which were commanded by British officers;
1757 – the capture of Bengal by the British, the beginning of the creation of the colonial empire. All other countries lost their holdings in India.
